This programme was developed to promote hockey as a ‘Sport for All’ demonstrating that it was inclusive for all individuals who may have a disability - physical and/or intellectual. Sport has value in everyone’s life and that is very true of a person with a disability. Engagement in sport not only has an impact on the physical body but also is effective in integrating people with a disability into society and encouraging increased interaction with both their disabled and able-bodied peers.
There was no provision for hockey to players with disability. Schools were supportive and helped drive the provision to provide regular hockey opportunities for their students. We received Tu Manawa funding to support the set up of the initiative. Breaking down barriers and ensuring we provide hockey for all.
Term 1 and Term 4 weekly coaching for schools at wha Hockey with Qualified coaches. Each term concluded with a festival where the players got to show off there skills with the other schools involved in the programme. The programme helped students develop their gross motor and ball skills. The next step is exploring players ability and desire to join main stream hockey sessions or play in a regular interschool competition.
Before these session were introduced there was little to no opportunity for players to participate. The funding we received enabled schools to receive hockey equipment to continue to use away from our programmes.
